Pock, Tobias (German painter, 1609-1683, active in Austria)
|
Note: Pock was from a Swabian family of artists, his father being a master builder at Konstanz Cathedral. He may have trained as a painter in southern Germany and may have travelled to Italy. The Martyrdom of St. Stephen (1640-1647; Vienna, Stephansdom) is his earliest known work. He subsequently became a leading painter in Vienna, painting altarpieces such as the Assumption (1658) at Mariae Himmelfahrt, St Pölten. His style is based in the art coming out of contemporary Augsburg and Munich but it also incorporates ideas from northern Italy and Flanders. |
