John XXII, Pope (French pope, 1240-1334)
|
Note: Born the son of a shoemaker, he studied medicine and taught canon and civil law. John XXII was the second Avignon pope. His papacy is noted for having centralized church administration, condemning the Spiritual Franciscans, expanding papal control over the appointment of bishops, and upholding papal authority over imperial elections, in this case against Emperor Louis IV. |
