Winckelmann, Johann Joachim (German art historian, 1717-1768)
|
Note: Winckelmann was a luminary in the study of ancient art. The author of numerous standard texts on the subject including Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums (1764), Winckelmann redefined archeological studies by classifying antiquities by period of origin, as opposed to subject matter. A student of Greek, Latin, theology, medicine and mathematics, his learned approach to Greek and Roman antiquities brought him membership into many learned societes, as well as the position of Commissioner of Antiquities for Pope Clement XIII in 1763. |
