Note: Refers to watermarks that are darker than the surrounding area on the sheet. A shaded watermark is produced by a depression in the sheet mold wire; when wet pulp flows into the recesses, the design is formed as different gradations of tone. The intaglio design, as opposed to a relief design, results in a thickening of the sheet at the point of contact, creating an opaque, or "shaded," design. It is a rather rare type of watermark; it has been produced since the early 19th century.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指暗於週邊紙區的浮水印。陰影浮水印係由紙模金屬線所壓製而成；濕紙漿流入凹槽時，由不同的色階形成圖樣。凹模圖樣和凸模圖樣相反，在接觸點稠化紙張，而產生不透明，或陰影圖樣的結果。這種浮水印相當罕見；自十九世紀初期起生產。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar watermerken die donkerder zijn dan het omringende gebied op het vel papier. Een schaduwwatermerk wordt geproduceerd door niveauverschillen in het draadwerk aan te brengen; wanneer het natte papierpulp in de verdiepte gedeelten loopt, wordt het ontwerp zichtbaar door de verschillen in toongradatie. Een intaglio-ontwerp, het tegengestelde van een reliëfontwerp, resulteert in een verdikking van het vel bij het contactpunt, waardoor een ondoorzichtig 'schaduw'ontwerp resulteert. Het is een vrij zeldzaam type watermerk, dat sinds het begin van de 19de eeuw wordt geproduceerd. |
