Note: Refers to components or embellishments used in antiquity in both the East and West. Moldmade protomai are often used on ancient vessels, typically plastic vases such as rhyta or kantharoi although also used on other vessel types such as cauldrons and shoulder hydriae. Protomai usually consist of the upper part (head, chest, and forelegs) of an animal or mythological creature or the head and upper body of a person. Protomai are often depicted in Greek vase paintings as shield devices as well. Amongst other things, protomai are also used as embellishments on ancient Hittite architecture and ancient Roman furniture. Protomai, especially in their earliest incarnations, most likely often had votive purposes. The term is occasionally used to refer to embellishments of a later date, particularly medieval stone architectural embellishments.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar componenten of verfraaiingen die tijdens de oudheid zowel in het oosten als in het westen werden gebruikt. Gemodelleerde dierkapitelen werden vaak toegepast bij oud vaatwerk, met name plastische vazen zoals rytons of kantharoi, maar ze komen ook bij andere typen vaatwerk zoals smeltkroezen en schouderhydria's. Dierkapitelen bestaan meestal uit een bovendeel (hoofd, borst en voorpoten) van een dier of mythologisch wezen, of het hoofd en bovenlichaam van een persoon. In Griekse vaasbeschilderingen worden dierkapitelen vaak ook als schildelementen afgebeeld. Dierkapitelen werden onder meer gebruikt als verfraaiing op oude Hettitische architectuur en Romeins meubilair. Met name in hun vroegste gedaanten hadden dierkapitelen vermoedelijk ook een functie als votiefbeeld. De term verwijst soms naar verfraaiingen van latere datum, met name in steen uitgevoerde architecturale verfraaiingen tijdens de Middeleeuwen. |
