Note: Refers to painted or carved image-bearing objects in a Christian church. Altarpieces are characterized by usually being framed and either set on the rear part of the altar abutting the back of the altarblock or hung on the wall behind the altar. Altarpieces may be set on both the central high altar and side altars. The subject of the image is typically a religious figure or figures, often included in a narrative or didactic scene; it may also include a patron of the church.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar geschilderde of beeldgesneden beelddragende objecten in christelijke kerken. Kenmerkend voor altaarstukken is dat deze meestal zijn ingelijst, en dat ze óf aan de achterkant van het altaar zijn opgesteld, aansluitend op de achterkant van het altaarblok, óf op de muur achter het altaar zijn gehangen. Altaarstukken kunnen op zowel het centrale hoogaltaar als op de zijaltaren zijn geplaatst. Op de afbeelding zijn doorgaans religieuze figuren te zien die dikwijls deel uitmaken van een verhalende of didactische scène. Ook een beschermheilige van de kerk wordt vaak op een altaarstuk afgebeeld. |
| German ..... Bezieht sich auf ein gemaltes oder ein geschnitztes Bild tragendes Objekt in einer christlichen Kirche. Ein Altarbild ist gewöhnlich dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es gerahmt ist und entweder an die Rückseite des Altars gesetzt ist, an den hinteren Teil des Altarblocks anstoßend, oder an der Wand hinter dem Altar hängt. Ein Altarbild kann sowohl auf den zentralen Hochaltar als auch auf Seitenaltäre gesetzt sein. Das Thema des Bildes ist normalerweise eine religiöse Figur oder Figuren, oft in eine erzählende oder belehrende Szene eingefügt; es kann auch einen Patron der Kirche enthalten. |
