Note: HIstorically, sticks or rods made of wood or other materials, and marked with transverse notches for the purpose of counting or measuring a debt or payment. Some tallies were split, and a debtor and creditor would each retain halves of the sticks which would be cleft lengthwise across the notches, constituting legal proof of the debt.

| Dutch ..... Stokken of staven van hout voor het tellen of meten van een schuld of betaling. De schuldenaar en schuldeiser behielden ieder een helft van de stok, die in de lengte werd doorgezaagd, dwars door de kerven heen, zodat deze als rechtsgeldig schuldbewijs kon dienen. |
