Title Notes on arms, hands, legs, and feet, from Yvonne Rainer’s dance scripts notebook
Maker Yvonne Rainer (American, b. 1934)
Date ca. 1962
Type sketches and materials
Location Getty Research Institute, Yvonne Rainer Papers, 2006.M.24, box 30, folder 10

These notebook pages show Yvonne Rainer using language as a tool to both deconstruct and rediscover the body’s possibilities for movement, much like the American sculptor Richard Serra would do in 1967 with his text piece Verb List, which spells out the available terms of his sculptural process. Rainer’s notes evoke the intertwined conversations between dance, object-making, poetry, and music in this time period and point to the underacknowledged influence of dance in particular on the minimal and postminimal art forms that would appear later in the decade.
