Managing Collection Environments: Technical Notes and Guidance is a suite of sixteen technical notes from eleven authors presenting a holistic perspective on the sustainable environmental management of collections in museums, galleries, archives, and libraries.

Originally developed for the course “Preserving Collections in the Age of Sustainability,” the publication presents fundamental concepts such as climate physics and data collection/analysis, practical issues and approaches to managing the indoor environment, and broad-scale topics such as historical⁄organizational contexts and consensus building.

Technical notes are grouped into themes:
  • Context and Background: understanding issues related to collection preservation and its environment
  • Analysis and Uncertainties: unpacking the complexities of environmental requirements for collections and materials
  • Approaches to Environmental Management: examining information frameworks that support decision-making on collection environments
  • Building and Communicating Sustainable Change: focusing on communication, negotiation, and influence to strengthen the ability of collection care professionals to lead change

Each technical note is self-contained and can stand alone in providing insight on a specific topic. However, as no single field of study holds the solution and no one solution can be applied universally, the diverse elements presented in this publication—technical knowledge, organization, management, communication—need to be woven into an interdisciplinary whole to support sustainable practice.

The technical notes also allow readers to engage their own perspectives and practical experiences, a crucial step towards the application of new information, tools, and skills and the promotion of dialogue about sustainable collection environments.
