The workshop series Recent Advances in Characterizing Asian Lacquers, which began in Los Angeles in 2012 and will include workshops in the United States, Europe and Asia, developed from an ongoing collaborative research project between the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum into Asian and western lacquers. The research from this project has produced a wealth of new information about lacquers including a number of highly specialized protocols and tools for getting detailed compositional information about lacquers.

The Recent Advances in Characterizing Asian Lacquers workshops put these complementary techniques and tools into practice in a collaborative setting between scientists and conservators and aim to help participants improve their capacity to characterize lacquers and to better understand lacquer and lacquer analysis.

The didactic materials below were created for the workshop series. New materials will be added as they are developed.
