Life of Saint Roch (Christian iconography)

Note: Narratives from the life of St. Roch, who is patron of the plague, depicted with the plague sore. According to the Golden Legend and his Vita, he was the son of a noble or magistrate, orphaned, and became a mendicate pilgrim. While ministering to the sick, he himself was afflicted by the plague. He retired to the forest, where he was miraculously provided water and was fed bread by a dog. He is often portrayed as exposing a plague sore on his upper thigh.
