Record Type: Allegory/Symbolism/Theme

Immaculate Conception (Christian theme)

Note: Theme symbolizing the birth of Mary without original sin on her soul, unlike all other humans since Adam and Eve. Distinguished from the Virgin Birth, with which common culture often confuses it. Often depicted with Mary aloft, surrounded by angels, perhaps standing on a crecent moon or stars. Common in earlier art, as early as the 5th century in Syria, but was not dogmatically approved until by Pope Pius IX in 1854.
