Abu Simbel Relocation Project (engineering project; engineers and builders: Atlas Copco, Sandvik, Skånska Cement...; 1964-1968; Abu Simbel (Aswān, Miṣr, Africa, World, Top of the TGN...; )
Note: Located in: Abu Simbel, Egypt; Dismantling and reassembly project for Temples at Abu Simbel, which were moved onto an artificial rock cliff 65 meters greater in elevation and 200 meters further inland. With the construction of the large Aswan Dam, two ancient temples would have been submerged. To move the temples, the rock above the temple roofs was peeled away; the roofs, walls and facades were cut into blocks, each weighing between 20 and 30 tons. Because the temples were carved in porous sandstone, explosives could not be used; the stone masses above the temple roofs were removed with bulldozers, along with a pneumatic breaker, compressors, and drills.
