| Note: Mogao Grottoes Cave 17, Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Rather than conceptualize a single composition, the long sequence of sketches on the verso of a Daoist scripture consists of a variety of figure and head studies clearly executed by more than one painter. Some are oriented vertically, as is typical for a horizontally read hand scroll, while larger sketches were executed perpendicular to this. A date interpreted as either 861 or 921 appears on this scroll, though whether this refers to the production of these sketches is disputed. | |
