Record Type: Corporate Body
Royal Academy of Arts (English fine arts academy, London, founded 1768)

Note: The leading art academy in England, founded in 1768 to establish formal training and professional standards for artists and supported by royal patronage. It followed previous attempts to establish a public or royal academy of art, as opposed to existing private academies, which had been made in 1698 during the reign of William III and in 1749 and 1755 during the reign of George II. By the mid-1800s the influence of the Royal Academy lessened as many artists found it and its rules old-fashioned.
