Polignac, Winnaretta de (American patron and painter, 1865-1943, active in France)

Note: Famous for her Parisian salon and as patroness of the performing arts. She was the sister of Isaac Merritt Singer, who is often known as the inventor of the sewing machine. She was as the heiress to a part of the Singer Sewing Machine fortune and a millionaire at the age of eighteen. She married Prince Edmond de Polignac, an amateur composer who brought her into contact with the most elite of French society. After her husband's death, she used her fortune to benefit the arts, science, and letters.
