Record Type: Person
Master of Wittingau (Bohemian painter, active late 14th century)

Note: His name is taken from a town in southern Bohemia where there is an altarpiece at the church of St. Giles in the Augustinian monastery in Třeboň. It is supposed that this dates from after 1380, when work on the church vaults was intitiated. Surviving panels represent scenes from the Passion of Christ: the Agony in the Garden, the Entombment, and the Resurrection. A group of works are attributed to his workshop: Virgin Mourning and St. Christopher (Církvice Parish Church); the Adoration of the Magi (Hluboká nad Vltavou, Castle); the Crucifixion, the Virgin and Child, and Aracoeli Madonna (all housed at the Convent of St. George, Prague). There is evidence that the Master of the Třeboň Altar worked in Prague, though most of his works originate from provincial Bohemian locations. His influence can be seen in succeeding panel paintings, manuscript illumination, and sculpture into the 15th century.
