McDermott, Margaret (American patron and philanthropist, 1912-2018)
|
Note: Patron of the arts gave millions in support of culture, education, and science. McDermott funded many projects in the city of Dallas. She served on the Dallas Museum of Art board of trustees for fifty-seven years, and donated 3,100 artworks to the museum. McDermott attended the University of Texas and worked as a newspaper reporter for the Dallas Times Herald and the Dallas Morning News. McDermott was married to scientist and philanthropist Eugene McDermott (1899-1973), the cofounder of Texas Instruments. She was widely known for her collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modernist works, which she assembled with her husband. Together they donated to various organizations including the University of Texas at Dallas. Eugene cofounded the Graduate Center of the Southwest, which later became UT-Dallas, in 1961. |
