Berkson, Bill (American poet, 1939-2016)
|
Note: Born in New York City in 1939, he first studied poetry in Kenneth Koch’s class at the New School for Social Research in 1959. At this time he met Frank O’Hara, James Schuyler, and other New York school poets. He attended Brown University, 1957-1959; Columbia University, 1959-1960; The New School for Social Research, 1959-1961; and New York University Institute of Fine Arts. He became an editor at Artnews in 1960. In 1970 he relocated to the Bay Area and taught art history, writing, and poetry at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1984-2008. He wrote for Artforum, and had published over twenty volumes of his poetry, in addition to volumes of his critical writing. |
