Anp'yŏng, Prince (Korean calligrapher and collector, 1418-1453)
|
Note: Third son of King Sejong; practiced poetry, painting, and calligraphy. He was a major patron and collector of the arts, including the work of the painter An kyon. His own calligraphic work followed the Chinese style exemplified by Zhao Mengfu. A member of the Joseon royal family, Yi Yong was a calligrapher active in the early Joseon period. He was known for his calligraphy not only in his lifetime, but also in the years following his death. In particular, his calligraphy in the Songxue style reached a level of excellence unmatched by other calligraphers of the Joseon Dynasty and greatly contributed to the spread of the Songxue style in the early Joseon period. He exerted a considerable influence on the calligraphic styles of numerous calligraphers during the first half of the Joseon Dynasty, particularly within the royal family. Furthermore, Yi Yong greatly influenced the literary field of the time by collecting a variety of Chinese calligraphic works and paintings and frequently holding gatherings with literati figures. |
