Diocletian, Emperor of Rome (Roman emperor, 245-316 CE)
|
Note: Born to a family of low status in Dalmatia, he was cavalry commander to the Emperor Carus; after the death of Carus and his heir, Diocletian was proclaimed emperor. Noted for having restored efficient government to the empire after the near anarchy of the 3rd century. His reorganization of the fiscal, administrative, and military machinery of the empire laid the foundation for the Byzantine Empire in the East and temporarily shored up the decaying empire in the West. A great patron of the arts and architecture. |
