Purkyně, Karel (Bohemian painter and printmaker, 1834-1868)
|
Note: Painter of Prussian birth whose work was little known during his life. He was also an art critic known for challenging the conventions of his time and he was highly regarded by modernists at the turn of the century. He studied at private art schools in Munich, Paris, and Vienna. Notable works include "Jech the Smith" (1860). Purkyně tended to disregard the practice of history painting, preferring to focus on portraits and still lifes. |
