Note: The town is located on the Danube River, west of Krems. In 1192 Leopold VI of Austria imprisoned England's Richard I in Kuenringer Castle, now a ruin, from where he was released in 1194 for a great ransom. The town retains much of its medieval architecture and cobbled streets. It is also known for the vineyards of Vachau surrounding it.
