Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. The reservation spans over 1,130,000 acres in the Yakama Valley along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in southwestern Washington state. More specifically, it lies within Yakima, Klickitat, and Lewis Counties, Washington. Reservation lands were initially granted to the Nation in accordance with a 1855 treaty signed by then-Governor Isaac Stevens and representatives of the Cayuse, Umatilla, Wallawalla, Nez Perce, and Yamaka Nations. Soon after the treaty was signed, however, Governor Stevens broke the treay by declaring Indian lands open for white settlers. The Nation was forced to cede more than 10,000,000 acres of reservation lands to the federal government, sparking the Yakima War of 1855-1859. As a result of this war, the Nation led a successful legal battle to retain their reservation lands. While the Nation was again forced to cede much of their land to non-Native settlers by 1980, they spent almost 54 million dollars to repurchase lost reservation lands in the early 1990s. |
