Note: The town in Hainaut province in southwestern Belgium lies along the Central Canal around eleven miles east of Mons. It has been a coal-mining center since the 14th century, and today manufactures steel and sheet metal as well as ceramics and furniture. Mary of Hungary, sister of Charles V and queen of the Netherlands, built a palace near here in 1554. The palace park houses an art and antiquities museum with a large library, built between 1962 and 1967. The 2003 estimated population was 76,800.
