Note: The region comprises the French-speaking southern half of Belgium. Historically it was the country of the Walloons, whose name was derived from Teutonic word for "foreign." The ancestors of the Walloons were the Gallic Belgi. The modern region was approved by the Belgian legislature on May 8, 1993 and officially created in 1995 in the reorganization of Belgium's provincial administration along ethno-linguistic lines. It includes the provinces of Hainaut, Liège, Luxembourg, Namur, and Walloon Brabant, and the city of Namur is its capital. |
