Note: Species of cereal plant native to the Americas but introduced to the rest of the world in the 16th century. It is a tall annual grass with a sturdy stalk; it produces rows of edible kernels along an oblong ears growing from the thick stalk. It is known in many varieties having yellow, red, blue, pink, and black kernels, often banded, spotted, or striped. Corn is used as livestock feed, as human food, a raw material in industry, fuel, corn oil, corn syrup, cornstarch, corn flour, and ethanol (whiskey, gasoline). In addition to biomass for fuel, the stalks have been used as additives for acoustical tiles. Corncobs have been carved into smoking pipes; cobs and husks have been used for dolls.

| Dutch ..... Graangewas dat afkomstig is uit Amerika, maar in de zestiende eeuw werd geïntroduceerd in de rest van de wereld. Het is een hoge eenjarige grassoort met een stevige steel. De vrucht bestaat uit rijen eetbare pitten op langwerpige aren die aan de dikke steel groeien. Er zijn veel verschillende variëteiten met gele, rode, blauwe, roze en zwarte kolven, vaak met spikkels of strepen. Mais gebruikt men als voedsel voor mensen en dieren, als grondstof in de industrie, voor het maken van brandstof, maisolie, maissiroop, maizena, maisbloem en ethanol (whisky, benzine). De stengels gebruikt men als biomassa om brandstof te maken, maar ook voor systeemplafonds. Uit maiskolven sneed men vroeger tabakspijpen. De kolven en het vlies eromheen gebruikte men om poppen te maken. |

| Spanish ..... Especie de planta de cereal nativa de las Américas pero introducida en el resto del mundo en el siglo XVI. Es una hierba alta anual con un tallo robusto; produce hileras de granos comestibles a lo largo de una espiga oblonga que crece del grueso tallo. Es conocido en muchas variedades que tienen granos amarillos, rojos, azules, rosados y negros, a menudo anillados, manchados o rayados. El maíz se usa como alimento para el ganado, como alimento humano, materia prima en la industria, combustible, aceite de maíz, jarabe de maíz, almidón de maíz, harina de maíz y etanol (whisky, gasolina).
