Note: Lighting devices having a vessel to contain fuel used as a source of illumination, such as grease or oil. The term also refers to relatively small -- of a size to be placed on or beside a desk or table -- household or office lighting devices that incorporate a vessel of glass or some similar material that encloses the source of illumination, whether a candle, oil, gas-jet, or incandescent wire inside a light bulb. The lamp was invented at least as early as 70,000 BCE, originally consisting of a hollowed-out rock filled with moss or some other absorbent material that was soaked with animal fat and ignited. To refer to the glass bulbs used as a component of electric lamps, use "light bulbs." |

Dutch ..... Verlichtingsmiddelen met een houder voor de brandstof voor de verlichting, meestal vet of olie. De benaming wordt ook gebruikt voor lampen die met een aparte energiebron zijn verbonden, zoals gas of elektriciteit. |
German ..... Beleuchtungsvorrichtung mit einem Behälter, der Brennstoffe wie Fett oder Öl als Quelle der Lichterzeugung enthält. Der Begriff bezieht sich auch auf relativ kleine Beleuchtungsvorrichtungen in Haushalt oder Büro, die auf oder neben einen Tisch oder Schreibtisch gestellt werden können. Eine Leuchte schließt ein Gefäß aus Glas oder ähnlichem Material ein, das die Lichtquelle umgibt, sei dies eine Kerze, Öl, ein Gasbrenner oder ein Glühfaden in einer Glühlampe. Leuchten gibt es bereits seit mindestens 70.000 Jahren vor unserer Zeitrechnung; ursprünglich bestanden sie aus ausgehöhlten Steinen, die mit Moos oder anderem absorbierenden Material gefüllt waren, das mit Tierfett getränkt und angezündet wurde.
