Note: Late 18th-century English name for long, low, upholstered sofas. The term 'ottoman' first appeared in Le Bastide's "La Petite Maison" of 1753-1754. The French term is more precise, usually referring more specifically to ottomans built on an oval plan with one end higher than the other.

Additional Notes:

Chinese (traditional) ..... 西元十八世紀晚期的詞彙，指稱長且低矮的軟墊沙發。此詞最早是在1753至1754年間出現於法國作家巴斯提德(Jean-François de Bastide)的著作《小房屋》(La Petite Maison)中；此詞在法文中的意思更加精確，通常特指橢圓造型的軟墊沙發，沙發的一端比另一端還要高。

Dutch ..... Engelse benaming uit het eind van de 18de-eeuw voor lange, lage zitbanken met bekleding. De term 'ottomane' werd voor het eerst gebruikt in 'La Petite Maison' van Bastide, in 1753-1754. De Franse benaming is specifieker en verwijst meestal naar ottomanes op basis van ovale vormen, waarbij het ene uiteinde hoger is dan het andere.

German ..... Englische Bezeichnung des späten 18. Jahrhunderts für ein langes, niedriges, gepolstertes Sofa. Der Begriff "ottoman" erscheint erstmalig in Le Bastide's "La Petite Maison" von 1753-1754. Der französische Begriff ist präziser, und bezieht sich in der Regel speziell auf eine Ottomane, die über einem ovalen Grundriss aufgebaut ist, wobei das eine Ende höher liegt als das andere.
