Note: Long, upholstered seating objects with a back and two ends, and primarily used for sitting rather than reclining. Distinct from "couches (reclining furniture)" which have a back support and one end and are primarily used for reclining rather than sitting. The term "sofa" was first used in France at the end of the 17th century as an alternative for canapé. The terms sofa and settee are virtually interchangeable in 20th-century usage but there is a distinction between the two; a sofa is generally completely upholstered. |

Dutch ..... Lange, beklede zitbanken met een rugleuning en twee armleuningen; worden hoofdzakelijk gebruikt om op te zitten en niet om op te liggen. Te onderscheiden van 'rustbanken (sofa's)', die een ruggensteun aan één kant hebben en die voornamelijk worden gebruikt om op te liggen en niet om op te zitten. Tussen de termen 'bank' en 'sofa' wordt tegenwoordig vrijwel geen onderscheid gemaakt, maar er is wel degelijk een verschil: een sofa is meestal volledig bekleed. |
German ..... Lange, gepolsterte Sitzgelegenheit mit einer Rückenlehne und zwei Armlehnen, die hauptsächlich eher zum Sitzen als zum Liegen benutzt wird. Zu unterscheiden von einer ["Couch (Liegemöbel)"](300038583), die über eine Rückenstütze und eine Armstütze verfügt und eher zum Liegen als zum Sitzen verwendet wird. Die Bezeichnung "Sofa" wurde zuerst in Frankreich am Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts als alternative Benennung für "Canapé" gebraucht. Die Terme "Sofa" und "Sette" finden ab dem 20. Jahrhundert [im Englischen] nahezu synonym Verwendung, jedoch besteht ein Unterschied zwischen beiden; ein Sofa ist in der Regel vollständig gepolstert. |
Spanish ..... Formas de asiento tapizadas y alargadas con un respaldo y dos extremos; usados en primer lugar para sentarse más bien que recostarse. Se diferencia de "reposera” que tiene un respaldo de apoyo y un extremo y se usa principalmente para recostarse más bien que para sentarse. |
