Note: Ancient French board game, popular in Europe during the Middle Ages, though said to have been derived from the Greeks. It was played with counters on a board depicting a jardin de l’oie (goose garden) and divided into compartments, in some of which a goose was depicted; other emblems included an inn, a death’s head, a bridge, and a labyrinth. The object of the game was to land one’s counter on number 63. The game was usually played for a stake, and special fines were exacted for landing on certain spaces. At the end of the 18th century, a variation of the game was called jeu de la revolution française (game of the French Revolution).

| Dutch ..... Een oud Frans bordspel dat vooral in de middeleeuwen populair was in Europa, al zegt men dat het is afgeleid van een Griekse voorloper. Het spel wordt gespeeld met pionnen op een bord, waarop een 'ganzentuin' is afgebeeld. Het bord is onderverdeeld in vakken, waarvan sommige een afbeelding van een gans dragen. Op andere vakken staan een herberg, een doodshoofd, een brug en een labyrint. Het doel van het spel is om de eigen pion op vak 63 te krijgen. Het spel werd indertijd doorgaans om geld gespeeld, en er werden speciale boetes gerekend als de pionnen op bepaalde vakken terechtkwamen. Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw werd een variant van dit spel ook wel 'jeu de la revolution française' ('spel van de Franse Revolutie') genoemd. |
