Note: A movement originating in the United States during the 1950s that began primarily with literature but encompasses other social and artistic modes. Mostly an urban phenomenon, centers included artist communities in San Francisco’s North Beach and Greenwich Village in New York City. In popular culture participants of this loose movement were referred to derisively as “beatniks.” Progenitors of the movement are considered to be the writers Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg and William Burroughs. |

Dutch ..... Een beweging die ontstond in de Verenigde Staten in de jaren 1950 en die in eerste instantie literair was, maar later ook andere maatschappelijke en artistieke uitingen kreeg. Het was vooral een fenomeen van de grote stad. Centra van de Beat Generation waren kunstenaarsgemeenschappen in North Beach in San Francisco en Greenwich Village in New York. In de popcultuur werden mensen die deel uitmaakten van deze losse beweging, vaak spottend 'beatniks' genoemd. Als stamvaders van de beweging gelden Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg en William Burroughs. |
