Note: Dualistic Christian sect founded in Armenia and eastern Byzantine Empire in the mid-7th century by an Armenian named Constantine. Other than a brief period when it found favor with the iconoclast emperors of the 8th and 9th centuries, the sect was persecuted and it consequently allied itself with Muslims. The sect was particularly influenced by the dualistic beliefs of Marcionism and of Manichaeism, which recognize an evil God and a good God with the former being the creator and ruler of this world and the latter of the world to come. While Paulicians honored the gospel according to St. Luke and the letters of St. Paul, they rejected the Old Testament, the letters of St. Peter, and the sacraments, worship, and hierarchy of the established church. The Paulicians influenced the 10th-century neo-Manichaean Bogomils. Small Paulician communities were found in the early 19th century in Russian-occupied areas of Armenia.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 西元七到十一世紀間，在亞美尼亞及東拜占庭帝國建立的二元基督教教派。教派名源自保羅，但其身份為何則眾說紛紜。保羅派由一個名叫康士坦丁(Constantine)的亞美尼亞人創立於七世紀中葉，似乎引起普遍的政治及軍事叛變。除了在八、九世紀曾有短暫時間受到反對崇拜聖像的君主青睞之外，此教派受到迫害，且通常與穆斯林結盟。此教派尤其受到馬吉安主義(Marcionism)與摩尼教(Manichaeism)之二元信仰的影響。保羅派的二元論基本教義為：有惡神與善神，惡神是此世界的創造者與統治者，而善神的世界即將來臨。因此他們推論出一個異端觀念，認為耶穌並非真是瑪利亞的兒子。此教派雖然崇敬聖路加(St. Luke)的福音及聖保羅(St. Paul)的信函，但他們不信舊約及聖彼得(St. Peter)的信函。也不舉行聖餐、敬拜、不准教會有階級。雖然受到迫害，但此教派的教義仍舊傳佈出去，尤其是馬其頓、保加利亞、及希臘的農人。保羅派影響到另一個於十世紀初興起的新摩尼教派─鮑格米勒派(Bogomils)。十九世紀初時，於亞美尼亞的俄羅斯佔領地區可以發現小型的保羅派社區。 |
| Dutch ..... Dualistische christelijke geloofsgemeenschap, in de 7de tot 11de eeuw ontstaan in Armenië en het oosten van het Byzantijnse Rijk. De identiteit van Paulus, de naamgever van de paulicianen, is omstreden. De beweging, in het midden van de 7de eeuw gesticht door een Armeniër genaamd Constantijn, lijkt een wijdverbreide politieke en militaire opstand te hebben veroorzaakt. Behalve gedurende een korte periode waarin zij in de gunst was bij de iconoclastische keizers van de 8ste en 9de eeuw, werd de beweging voortdurend vervolgd met als consequentie dat zij een bondgenootschap aanging met de moslims. De beweging is vooral beïnvloed door de dualistische overtuigingen van het marcionisme en het manicheïsme. De fundamentele dualistische doctrine van de paulicianen stelde dat er een slechte God en een goede God bestaat, van wie de eerste de schepper en heerser van deze wereld is en de laatste de schepper en heerser van de wereld die komen gaat. Hieruit leidden zij de ketterse notie af dat Jezus niet werkelijk de zoon van Maria was. Terwijl de paulicianen het evangelie van Lucas en de brieven van Paulus in ere hielden, verwierpen zij het Oude Testament en de brieven van Petrus. Ook de sacramenten, de eredienst en de hiërarchie van de gevestigde kerk werden verworpen. Ondanks de vervolging verspreidden de doctrines van de beweging zich, in het bijzonder onder Macedonische, Bulgaarse en Griekse boeren. De paulicianen hebben invloed gehad op een andere neomanicheïstische gezindte, de bogomielen die in de 10de eeuw opkwamen. In de vroege 19de eeuw werden nog kleine pauliciaanse gemeenschappen aangetroffen in de door Russen bezette delen van Armenië. |
| Spanish ..... Secta dualista cristiana fundada en Armenia y al este del imperio Bizantino entre los siglos VII y XI. La filiación de Pablo del que los Paulicianos tomaron el nombre es debatida. Fundada a mediados del siglo VII por un armenio llamado Constantino, la secta parece haber causado una revuelta política y militar generalizada. Aparte de un periodo breve cuando tuvo el favor de los emperadores iconoclastas de los siglos VIII y IX, la secta fue perseguida y se alió por consiguiente con los musulmanes. La secta fue influenciada particularmente por las creencias del Marcionismo dualista y el Maniqueísmo. La doctrina fundamental de la secta de dualismo sostenía que hay un Dios malo y un Dios bueno siendo el primero el creador y gobernante de este mundo y el último, el del mundo por venir. De esto dedujeron la noción herética de que Jesús no era realmente el hijo de María. Mientras los Paulicianos honraban el Evangelio según San Lucas y las cartas de San Pablo, rechazaban el Antiguo Testamento y las cartas de San Pedro. Los sacramentos, el culto, y la jerarquía de la Iglesia establecida también eran rechazados. A pesar que la secta fue perseguida, sus doctrinas se extendieron, particularmente a Macedonia y a los campesinos Búlgaros y griegos. Los Paulicianos influyeron en otra secta neo-Maniqueísta, los Bogomiles que surgieron a principios del siglo X.
