Note: Genus containing around18 species of forest, timber, and ornamental shade trees native primarily to North Temperate areas. Many are cultivated for their height and attractive foliage. Prior to the industrial revolution, elms were also used as water pipes and in water pumps in large cities because they are durable in water. From 1925 to the mid 20th century, many of the native European and North American elms were killed by the Dutch elm disease. These trees are now being replaced by the disease resistant Chinese elm. Elm leaves are doubly toothed and often lopsided at the base. The petalless flowers appear before the leaves and are borne in clusters on jointed stems. The nutlike fruit, surrounded by a flat, sometimes hairy, winglike structure, is called a samara.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 包含約18種，為森林、木材與觀賞用遮蔭樹種，主要原生於北溫帶地區。許多樹種高大、葉叢茂盛，因而廣受栽植。工業革命之前，各地大城市利用榆樹的防水特性製作水管與水泵。從西元1925年至西元二十世紀中為止，許多歐洲與北美洲的原生榆樹因荷蘭榆樹病而死亡。這些原生種如今正漸漸被具抗病性的中國榆樹取代。葉緣重鋸齒，葉基通常偏斜。花無瓣，開在葉之前，簇生於有節的枝條上。翅果，狀似堅果，包裹著一層平坦的翼狀結構，有時帶有絨毛。 |
