Note: Species of handsome, broad-topped, slow-growing (to 80 feet (25 m) in height) tree native to eastern Mexico, Central America, and south to Colombia. It produces edible tomato-like fruit. It is used medicinally: the crushed bark and leaves are applied as a blistering poultice; the leaf decoction is employed as an astringent and is taken internally as a febrifuge; various preparations are used against leprosy, ringworm and itching skin conditions. Unripe black persimmon fruits are very astringent, irritant, caustic and bitter, and have been used as fish poison. It is unrelated to other plants called "sapote," the mamey sapote (Sapotaceae), and the white sapote (Rutaceae).

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 美觀、樹頂寬闊、生長緩慢（可成長至80英呎（25公尺）高）的喬木物種，原生於墨西哥東部、中美洲、南至哥倫比亞。所結果實外觀形似番茄且可食用。此物種具有醫藥用途：樹皮與葉片搗碎可作為起泡的濕敷藥物；葉片煎煮後可作為收斂止血劑，內服則為退熱劑，也有各種製劑可用於對抗痲瘋病、金錢癬、皮膚癢等。未成熟的黑柿果實極具收斂性、刺激性、腐蝕性、並有苦味，曾被用作為魚毒。此物種與稱為「人心果」（sapote）的其他植物（山欖科的馬米果、芸香科的白人心果）沒有親屬關係。 |
| Dutch ..... Mooie boom met een brede kruin die langzaam groeit en 25 meter hoog kan worden. De boom is inheems in het gebied dat zich uitstrekt van Oost-Mexico en Midden-Amerika tot in Colombia. De zwarte zapote produceert eetbare vruchten die op tomaten lijken. Met verschillende delen van de boom maakt men medicijnen. De schors en bladeren worden vermalen en gebruikt voor cataplasma's tegen blaren. Het afkooksel van de bladeren gebruikt men als een adstringerend middel. Men neemt het ook in als koortswerend middel. Daarnaast maakt men met delen van de boom middelen tegen lepra, ringwormen en jeukende huidaandoeningen. Onrijpe zwarte vruchten zijn in hoge mate adstringerend, prikkelend, bijtend en bitter. Soms gebruikte men ze als vissengif. De zwarte zapote is niet verwant aan andere bomen die men ook ���zapote' noemt, zoals de mamey zapote (Sapotaceae) en de witte zapote (Rutaceae). |
