Note: Small plant distinguished by the club-like shape of its upright fertile spore-cases and the very small microphylls, a kind of leaf that arose and evolved independently from the leaves of other vascular plants; the microphyll has only a single unbranched strand of vascular tissue. While this division is a small and inconspicuous group of plants today, in the Carboniferous some lycophytes were forest-forming trees more than 35 meters tall. Lycophytes are the oldest extant group of vascular plants, and dominated major habitats for 40 million years.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 具直立棒狀的多產孢子囊與極微小的小型葉的小型植物。小型葉的形成與發育有別於其他維管束植物的葉片，僅具有單一無分支的維管束組織。雖然石松植物門在現今屬規模小又不顯眼的植物群，但在石炭紀(Carboniferous)時期，某些石松類林木的高度可超過三十五公尺。石松類為維管束植物當中，最古老的現存植物群，在主要棲息地上主宰長達四千萬年。 |
| Dutch ..... Kleine plant, gekenmerkt door de vruchtbare sporenhouder op de stokachtige, rechtopstaande stengel en de zeer kleine microfyllen. Een microfyl is een soort blaadje dat onafhankelijk van de bladeren van andere vaatplanten ontstond en evolueerde. Microfyllen hebben maar één enkele onvertakte strook vaatweefsel. Hoewel deze stam tegenwoordig een kleine en onopvallende groep planten vormt, waren sommige soorten die in het Carboon voorkwamen bomen die bossen vormden en meer dan 35 meter hoog werden. Lycophyta is de oudste bestaande groep vaatplanten en 40 miljoen jaar lang was het in grote gebieden de dominante groep. |
