Note: Genus containing 10 species; it is the only genus of the family Platanaceae. These large trees are native to North America, eastern Europe, and Asia. They are characterized by scaling bark; large, deciduous, usually palmately lobed leaves; and globose heads of flower and seed. They bear flowers of both sexes on the same tree but in different clusters.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genus van 10 soorten. Het is het enige genus van de familie Platanaceae. Deze grote bomen zijn inheems in Noord-Amerika, Oost-Europa en Azië. Ze hebben een schilferende schors, grote afvallende, gewoonlijk gevingerde en gelobde bladeren, en bolvormige bloem- en zaadknoppen. Op de bomen groeien bloemen van beide geslachten, maar in verschillende trossen.
