Note: General term referring to various trees and shrubs that form dense thickets in muddy coastal swamps and tidal estuaries in tropical and subtropical regions, marked by their ability to tolerate salt water and by their possession of different forms of aerial roots. The term is applied chiefly to species of the genera Rhizophora and Bruguiera (family Rhizophoraceae), Avicennia (family Avicenniaceae), Laguncularia (family Combretaceae), and Sonneratia (family Lythraceae).

Dutch ..... Algemene term voor verschillende bomen en struiken die dicht struikgewas vormen in modderige kustmoerassen en estuariën in tropische en subtropische gebieden. Mangroven kunnen goed tegen zout water en hebben opvallende luchtwortels met verschillende vormen. De term ���mangrove' gebruikt men voornamelijk voor soorten uit de genera Rhizophora en Bruguiera (familie Rhizophoraceae), Avicennia (familie Avicenniaceae), Laguncularia (familie Combretaceae) en Sonneratia (familie Lythraceae).
