Note: Genus containing around 18 species of deciduous timber and nut-producing trees native to eastern North America and eastern Asia. Fossil remains identifiable as belonging to the genus are found in western North America, Greenland, Iceland, and Europe. It has tough heavy wood, and drupes (mostly with a hard woody rind or husk) enclosing 'nuts,' the kernels of which in several species are edible.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genus van ongeveer achttien soorten loofbomen waarvan het hout en de noten worden gebruikt, en die inheems zijn in het oosten van Noord-Amerika en het oosten van Azië. In Europa en het westen van Noord-Amerika en op Groenland en IJsland zijn fossiele resten gevonden van soorten die tot dit genus behoorden. De bomen hebben sterk en zwaar hout en produceren steenvruchten (meestal met een harde, houtachtige schil of dop) waarin ���noten' zitten. De pitten in de ���noten' van diverse soorten zijn eetbaar.
