Note: Genus containing 5 species of resinous, evergreen ornamental and timber conifers of the cypress family (Cupressaceae), native to North America and eastern Asia. The genus is monophyletic and sister to Thujopsis or false arborvitae. Arborvitae are trees or shrubs, usually pyramidal in habit, with thin, scaling outer bark and fibrous inner bark, horizontal or ascending branches, and characteristically flattened, spraylike branchlet systems. Each branchlet has four rows of tiny, scalelike leaves. Juvenile leaves are much longer and needlelike and in some species may persist along with the mature foliage. Male and female reproductive structures (cones) are borne at the tips of different branchlets of the same tree, the male cones rounded and reddish or yellowish, the female very small and green or tinged with purple. They are commonly known as arborvitae (from Latin for tree of life) or thujas; several species are widely known as cedar but they are not true cedars (Cedrus).

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 屬名，包含5種柏科（Cupressaceae）含樹脂的常綠觀賞植物和木材用針葉樹，是北美洲和東亞的原生種。此屬植物為單一門，且是羅漢柏的姊妹屬。側柏是喬木或灌木，通常為金字塔形，有著細薄、鱗片狀的外層樹皮和纖維狀的內層樹皮，樹枝呈水平或向上發展，以及代表性的扁平、頂端分叉的小樹枝系統。每根小樹枝都有四列細小、鱗片狀的樹葉。幼期葉比較長且呈針狀，部分種的幼期葉可能到了成年還保留下來。雄性和雌性的生殖構造（毬果）是長在同一棵樹上不同小樹枝的頂端，雄的毬果為圓形，呈紅色或黃色，雌的毬果非常小，呈綠色或有些許紫色調。它們通常稱為arborvitae（拉丁文「生命之樹」的意思）或thujas；該屬有些種類被稱為雪松（cedar），但並非真正的雪松屬（Cedrus）。 |
| Dutch ..... Genus van vijf soorten harshoudende, groenblijvende sier- en productieconiferen uit de cipresfamilie (Cupressaceae), die voorkomt in Noord-Amerika en het oosten van Azië. Het genus is monofyletisch en verwant met de Thujopsis. Levensbomen zijn bomen of heesters met een doorgaans piramidale bouw en dunne, geschubde buitenschors en vezelige binnenschors, horizontale of omhooglopende takken en kenmerkende afgeplatte waaiervormige takjesstelsels. Ieder takje heeft vier rijen zeer kleine, schubachtige blaadjes. De jonge blaadjes zijn veel langer en naaldachtig, en sommige soorten handhaven zich naast het volwassen gebladerte. De mannelijke en vrouwelijke voortplantingssystemen (kegels) bevinden zich op de punten van de verschillende takjes van dezelfde boom. De mannelijke kegels zijn afgerond en roodachtig of gelig van kleur, terwijl de vrouwelijke kegels zeer klein zijn en een groene of paarsige tint hebben. Ze worden doorgaans aangeduid als levensboom of thuja. Diverse soorten zijn algemeen bekend als ceder (Cedrus) maar zijn dat feitelijk niet. |
