| Dutch ..... Esthetisch begrip of uitdrukking gebruikt eerst aangaande de vroeg zeventiende-eeuwse Nederlandse ('schilderachtig') en Italiaanse schilderkunst ('pittoresco'), waar het veelal betrekking heeft op de schilderkunst en de manier waarop iets wordt afgebeeld, alsook de zichtbare werkelijkheid zelf die als 'schilderwaardig' kon worden beschouwd. In de Europese schilderkunst van de 18e eeuw en later de Europese architectuur van de 19e eeuw vloeien de twee traditionele connotaties van de term - de classicistische (keurig, ordentelijk en zedig) en traditionele (levendig, charmant en natuurgetrouw) - samen, en duidt het op een stijl die wordt gekenmerkt door ruwe, merkwaardige of ongewone vormen; het heeft vooral betrekking op rustieke landschappen en bouwvallige gebouwen die noch de ontzagwekkende grandeur van het verhevene hebben noch de rust en regelmaat van de schoonheid. |
