Note: Refers to sworn confraternities, brotherhoods, or associations formed for the mutual aid, protection of its members, or for the furtherance of professional interests. In the context of art and related disciplines, it refers to associations of artists, craftsmen, tradesmen, or merchants, which flourished in Europe between the 11th and 16th centuries and formed an important part of the economic and social fabric of this period. Most guilds were associated with a particular town or city. Guilds often monitored training, standards of production, and the welfare of their members. Guilds also provided significant patronage of the arts.

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar gezworen fraterniteiten, broederschappen of verenigingen, gevormd voor de wederzijdse steun en bescherming van de leden of de behartiging van beroepsmatige belangen. In de kunst en aanverwante vakgebieden verwijst de term naar verenigingen van kunstenaars, handwerksmannen, ambachtslieden of handelaren, die hun bloeitijd kenden in Europa tussen de 11de en 16de eeuw en in die periode een belangrijk onderdeel vormden van de economische en sociale structuur. De meeste gilden hadden betrekking op een bepaalde stad. Gilden waakten meestal over de opleiding, de productienormen en het welzijn van hun leden. Gilden verschaften ook aanzienlijke steun aan de kunsten. 
Spanish ..... Refiérase a las confraternidades, o a las asociaciones formadas para la ayuda mutua, protección de sus miembros, o para el fomento de intereses profesionales. En el contexto del arte y de las disciplinas relacionadas, refiere a asociaciones de artistas, de artesanos, de comerciantes, o de los comerciantes, que prosperaron en Europa entre los siglos XI y XVI los cuales formaron una parte importante de la vida económica y social de ese período. La mayoría de los gremios fueron asociados a una ciudad o a una ciudad particular. Los gremios supervisaron a menudo el entrenamiento, estándares de la producción, y el bienestar de sus miembros. Los gremios también proporcionaron el patrocinio significativo de los artes.
