Note: A natural organic colorant extracted from the roots of any of several species of the genus Rubia, having a reddish color. Madder has been used as a colorant for dyeing textiles since ancient times in India, Persia, and Egypt. It has been largely replaced as a dye and a pigment by synthetic alizarin. Used for dye and lake pigment preparation.

Dutch ..... Een rode, natuurlijke organische kleurstof, die ook als substraatpigment wordt gebruikt en wordt verkregen uit de wortel van de meekrapplant, Rubia tinctorum, en uit verschillende andere planten; het belangrijkste kleurcomponent is alizarine. Als verfstof en pigment grotendeels vervangen door synthetisch alizarine. 
Spanish ..... Colorante orgánico natural rojo, también utilizado como pigmento de laca, extraído de la raíz de la rubia o alizarí, Rubia tinctorum, y varias otras plantas. Su principal componente colorante es la alizarina. Ampliamente reemplazado como colorante o pigmento por la alizarina sintética.
