California Landscape and History

Future Exhibitions

Learn about California history with your students by exploring the exhibition Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California. The exhibition presents over 150 works by photographer Carleton Watkins and his contemporaries and provides a unique vision of California industry and landscape from 1850 to the mid-1880s. The exhibition includes images of mining, transportation, and land claims made for the financiers who were building and expanding westward, into a new U.S. territory.

Adapt the lesson "Environmental Impact" to have students in grades 6–12 analyze one of the 19th-century photographs in the exhibition. Students can examine how artists used the principles of design to convey a message about the California landscape and industry. Your students may also consider the history of California within the broader context of population expansion in U.S. history and write a research paper.

View the lesson "Environmental Impact."
