En no Gyōja (Buddhist character)

Note: Legendary monk (said to have lived ca. 634-701), considered the founder of the Shugendō religious tradition. Also known as En the Ascetic, due to his rejection of formalized Buddhist temples in favor of ascetic residence in remote mountains.
