 | Oka Crisis (Canadian history, 1990) | |
Note: Protest and blockade mounted by the Kanesatake Mohawk band against Canadian authorities. Centered on a land dispute between the Kanesatake Mohawk and Oka, Québec's mayor and city government; plans to extend a golf course into an historic Mohawk burial ground ignited the dispute. Blockades were assembled by Kanesatake individuals to cut off access to the burial ground and later to sever traffic between segments of Montr%00eal. At its height, the protest involved several different First Nations and the Canadian military. The grounds were eventually returned to the Kanesatake in late 1990. The crisis had wider implications, shaping the future of Canadian and First Nations relations with the establishment of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. | |
