Potlatch Ban (Canadian history, 1883-1951)

Note: Event marked by the time in Canadian/First Nations history when potlatch gatherings were outlawed across Canada and First Nations territories not formally annexed at the time. Part of the Indian Act (first enacted in 1876). Potlatches were viewed by governmental authorities at the time of the ban as a drain on material resources. Individuals who participated were subject to arrest and seizure of potlatch gifts; some of these gifts such as masks and rattles were later sold to museums across Canada. The ban was lifted in 1951.
