	Zapatista uprising (Mexican history, 1994)

Note: Initial confrontation during which native Mayan guerillas from the Chiapas highlands occupied government buildings in San Crist$00bal de las Casas and declared war on the Mexican state. Planned to coincide with the day that the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect, the conflict was part of a continuing struggle for land reforms and the plight of Mexico's indigenous populations.
