Battle of the Golden Spurs (European history, 1302)

Note: Military engagement in which an untrained Flemish infantry militia comprised of members of the weaver's guild defeated a French and patrician Flemish cavalry, which ended the threat of French annexation and began the political ascendancy of the weavers’ guild in the urban centers. The Battle of the Golden Spurs became an important cultural reference for the Flemish Movement in the 19th and early 20th century.
