	The Boer Wars (British-South African History, 1880-1881; 1899-1902)

Note: Two conflicts, comprising the First Boer War 1880-1881, when the Boers of the Transvaal rebelled against the British annexation of 1877, and the second conflict of 1899-1902, which many scholars now prefer to call the the South African War. The causes of the conflict between Great Britain and the two Boer (Afrikaner) republics - the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State remain contested. British politicians claimed that they were defending their "suzerainity" in the South African Republic, but historians contend that it was a struggle to control the Witwatersrand gold-mines there.
